Writers get ready. Calls for entries have been made for the 2012 edition of The BBC International Radio Playwriting Competition. The competition is open to writers from around the world over the age of 18 (as at 31 July 2012) resident outside Britain. Entrants are to write and submit a 53-minute radio drama for up to six characters, on any topic or theme. The play must be in English, unpublished, and must not have been previously produced in any medium. The playwriting competition is run by the BBC World Service and the British Council, in partnership with Commonwealth Writers, and is now in its 23rd year. There are two categories for the contest:
  • One for writers with English as their first language
  • One for writers with English as their second language
Two winners will be selected from each category and will each receive a £2,000 prize. There will also be certificates for runners-up. The winners will have the opportunity to visit London and see their winning plays made into a full radio production, which will then be broadcast on the BBC World Service.
