Founded in 2017, Babymigo is an offshoot of an earlier startup (Safermom) that provided useful healthcare information to pregnant women and nursing mothers. One of its co-founders, Olanrewaju Adeloye, says he launched Babymigo after realizing that these women wanted to have two-way communication with the experts, and with one another. Adeloye happened upon the idea of a digital help centre for mothers while training as a medical physiologist at a local university. He had noticed how anxious mothers were to have doctors attended to their babies’ health problems, and decided to create a solution that they could access wherever they were. Since morphing into Babymigo in 2017, the platform has grown its community into over 100,000 users. Most of these individuals are women from across Nigeria, who visit the website or use its mobile app to learn about maternal health and baby care and get answers to questions about their babies’ health from qualified medical professionals. Thus far, there have been over 25,000 questions asked and more than 75,000 answers provided on the platform. That’s a wealth of information for visitors to work with. They may also pose their own questions to the community or in chats with medical staff on the site.

The experts available on the Babymigo platform include gynaecologists, paediatricians, obstetricians, and baby nutritionists. There are over a hundred of these specialists on the site, and each attends to issues in their area of expertise. If parents choose to see healthcare providers in person, they can check the medical services listed in each location covered by Babymigo to find one that’s close to them. They can also find services like daycare and crèche and baby photographers too. Mothers who register on the website or app can find other mothers in the same age group and city. These groups may even organize offline events. Antenatal classes are available as well. As part of its effort to provide a comprehensive baby-and-parent-centred experience, Babymigo maintains a baby names register from which parents can choose a name for their babies. There’s also an ovulation calculator and an immunization schedule, both of which might come in handy for the startup’s target audience. Babymigo has received a fair degree of coverage from both local and international media. Perhaps the most important recognition it has gotten to date is being named one of Time Magazine’s 50 Genius Companies of 2018, a list that also had Amazon, Apple, and Airbnb on it. The Babymigo team isn’t resting on its laurels. They have the stated aims of reaching 20 million women by 2025 and reducing avoidable maternal and infant mortality by 45%.
