Africa’s foremost music-on-demand service, Boomplay, and one of the world’s biggest music company, Universal Music Group (UMG), have announced a landmark multi-market licensing collaboration for Africa. Boomplay is arguably Africa’s most popular music streaming and download service, and partnering with UMG, it will now be able to share music from any of UMGs labels all over the world, via its platform. Users will now have access to UMG’s substantial catalog of both home-grown and international artistes as UMGs songs have now be licensed to Boomplay, the first major music brand to do so. This is coming less than a year after UMG announced the launch of its West African division, Universal Music Nigeria in Lagos. UMG Executive Vice-President, Market Development Adam Granite said while making the announcement:
“We’re looking forward to working with Boomplay as we provide our African artists a range of creative, marketing and promotional resources to accelerate their careers within this vibrant and growing music market. This agreement will help UMG artists to reach new audiences, whilst boosting the African streaming experience to benefit both music fans, artists and songwriters.”
The General Manager, Universal Music Nigeria, Ezegozie Eze Jr. expressed delight at being the first global music company to partner with Boomplay, adding that this partnership will make the artists’ music better accessible to millions of music enthusiasts across the continent through the extended reach offered by the platform. Also speaking on the new partnership, Boomplay’s CEO, Joe He had this to say:
“Boomplay is determined to continue meeting the music passion point of Africans in a legitimate way, especially Boomplay users, and teaming up with a major music company in the global music industry like Universal Music Group, offers yet another significant opportunity for us to do so”.

Boomplay Music is a streaming on-demand service, a product of Transnet Music Limited. It was launched by mobile phone giant; Tecno Mobile in Lagos, Nigeria in August 2015. The platform currently serves over 36 million users in Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Uganda and Rwanda with over 2 million songs, and music videos running into thousands. Records show that its subscriber base grows by nearly 2 million per month. At the moment, the app is only available on the Android operating system, although the iOS-compatible version is scheduled for launch in a few weeks.
