With more parents seeking quality education for their children, a digitally optimized system of home tutoring seems an ideal route to take considering the fact that it guarantees the chances of students being paired with their ideal tutors. These game changers listed below have emerged to provide a digital means of acquiring the best tutors for students.

Prep Class

Prepclass.com was founded by two graduates from the Electrical Electronics Engineering department at Unilag Chukwuwezam Obanor and Olumide Ogunala.  They founded the enterprise in 2013 to provide a hub for tutors and students to connect under an organized system. The idea for the website came when they had just discovered the Joint Administration and Matriculation Board plan to innovate JAMB as a Computer Based Test (CBT). This brought forth the opportunity to create a platform that would help students across Nigeria prepare for local exams and have all the necessary resources at their disposal. However, this project later transformed into a platform where students get connected to their preferred and compatible tutor. Presently, Prepclass stands as the foremost home tutoring website in Nigeria with a huge pool of over 16000 tutors who are intensely vetted before they can receive approval for the job. Prepclass has received funding from Africa Angels Network and Venture Garden Group, and it also shares investors with the likes of Andela, Suregift, and a few other notable names. As a part of its achievements, Prepclass was mentioned by FastCompany as one of the most innovative companies in Africa in 2014 and its founders also got featured as one of the 30 entrepreneurs to look out for under 30 in 2016, in 2016.

Tuteria

Before Tuteria.com was Prepclass, but today,Tuteria has grown to become a viable player with Prepclass and the likes. Presently, Tuteria is a generator of revenue from commissions on lessons booked via the website or the mobile app. Tuteria was founded on June 9, 2015, by Godwin Benson, a First Class Engineering Graduate from the University of Lagos, and his partner, Abiola Odeniyi. Godwin’s negative experience while in secondary school (when he was not paid by a parent whose children he taught Mathematics) spurred him to create a platform that would prevent him and other tutors this in the future. Potential tutors undergo a rigorous process of verification before they can qualify as certified tutors on Tuteria.com. Due to its success as a home tutoring provider, Tuteria.com has received several accolades. In April 2015, Godwin was one of the winners of the Microsoft Mobile Devices and Services “passion to empire” campaign. Tuteria also won the internet.org innovation challenge for education in 2016 and emerged winner of the African Price for Engineering innovation and received a $32000 price by UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering.

Proteach

Proteach.com has had a spectacular growth from selling 500 tutoring hours in September 2016 to 4000 tutoring hours as at February 2017. In a similar fashion like Tuteria, the founder, Obasolape Abiola, got the inspiration for Proteach after seeing the dramatic progress in a student who had been performing woefully in Mathematics at the school he was teaching at for his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). After about two months of tutoring, the student became apt at solving Mathematics questions and rose to the top of the class. As a result, the website was born out of the desire to deviate from the traditional classroom system of “one teacher to 30 students” to “one teacher to one student”. It is the upheld belief of the founder that students have different concentration levels and hence, students should be taught by their tutors on a one-on-one basis. Proteach also performs a rigorous assessment on registered tutors before they can be qualified as “Proteach tutors” to ensure that students get the best learning experience. As a gesture for improvement, Proteach got in touch with Ventures Platform (a platform that invests in early-stage businesses) and participated in the Ventures Platform Acceleration Program with the aim to grow as a young startup. Proteach continues to soar higher as one of the ed-tech companies challenging the status quo of education in Nigeria.

Primal Tutor

Primal Tutor was founded by Wale Ogunjobi, a Civil Engineering Graduate from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomosho, Oyo State. Wale is presently a much-sought-after Digital Consultant, Google Digital Trainer, Certified Associate in Brand Management (CAPM) and a Brand Strategist. He started the business with the sole aim of adding value to the educational system in Sokoto State where he served during his National Youth Service Year. With the brand’s name being “Rising Star Tutors” at that time, Wale masterminded various seminars and conferences to inform the indigenes of the state about the importance of education and why they should embrace it. After his National Youth Service, he relocated to Lagos where he changed the business scheme of the brand to suit the Lagos market and rebranded its name as Primal Tutor Nigeria. Today, Primal Tutor serves as a platform for career counseling, recruitment of staff for schools, and home tutoring.

Home Works Nigeria

As the name implies, Home Works was created to specialize in homework help, online tutoring, and test preparation for students. The platform was set up by Lextorah Limited and is committed to connecting students to tutors in various subject fields. It caters to primary school pupils, secondary students, and university students. Like the rest listed above, tutors are vetted and scrutinized before they can teach on the platform. Students have to pay a subscription fee before they can be connected to tutors and other schools online.
