You need to know that promotion will not be handed to you on a platter of gold, you have to show that you are very competent and deserving of the top position. Many individuals tend to lose sight of the possible opening or next step in their career in a typical busy working environment.
  • Go for courses

The management talents and skills. Companies place great value on people who can bring in additional talent through their existing networks. They convince individuals with such talent and skills to join their company and cultivate those individuals into productive team members. In order to gain more skills on the job, join courses to learn. Another way to learn is to involve talented individuals in the company to help monitor your skill acquisition process. Don’t just stop at learning but exercise your skill at work. This will enable you to rise above your contemporaries in the office
  • Volunteer wherever you can

When it comes to a workplace, helpers are leaders. You have to show that you are a problem solver by volunteering in projects. Be an active participant in almost all of the organization’s activities. This will serve as evidence that you’re invested in the growth of the company above your interest.

Show you love your job. Note that while helping others, you must avoid getting credit pushed to another or you will end becoming the company’s pushover. For promotion-worthy employees, the work is what matters – they take their job personally, own it as a reflection of their values and take pride in doing good work. These are the sort of people that are entrusted with positions of responsibility.
  • Be a rainmaker

The company stands on the availability of funds and for this reason, the management will only qualify individuals who are rainmakers. When you become a part of the money makers in the company, you will be promoted. In fact, making money is the ultimate internal currency. Your monthly or weekly reports must have your internal performance metrics translated into the money-making metric. Also, carrying out tasks and giving quality results with minimal resources is a great proof of efficiency. This is because saving money is also making money.
  • Be a teammate

In considering people for promotions, the management will look for people that are really committed to their work. This will be shown in the quality of their work, the effort they put in, and the relationships they develop. Asides from competence, diligence, intelligence, loyalty, what matters the most is the inherent will to participate in teamwork towards achieving the best results possible. Whilst you carry out the above steps ensure that you don’t engage in petty office talks or this will thwart your efforts. People who aren’t partakers of office gossip and negativity demonstrate integrity and are trustworthy. Although small talks are encouraged, try to strike a balance.
