Following the completion of the casting of expansion joints on the Third Mainland Bridge on Saturday, January 30, 2021, the federal government has reopened the bridge which was shut down on the midnight of Friday, January 29.

It will be recalled that the government through the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola announced on Thursday, January 28, that the bridge would be closed for 72 hours to avoid vibrations that could hamper maintenance works on the bridge which is the major link between Lagos mainland and island. However, it would not take up to 72 hours as initially proposed for the maintenance to be finished as Mr. Popoola on Sunday, January 31, announced that the bridge would be reopened by midnight.
‘The casting of the expansion joints was completed on Saturday. Therefore, the Third Mainland Bridge will be opened by 12 midnight of January 31. Motorists can start plying the bridge as from 12 midnight.’ Olukayode Popoola
Also, Mr. Popoola noted that the Lagos State Government alongside relevant agencies has been informed of the reopening as the African commercial hub braces up for another week.

Reacting to the development, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, in an official statement on Sunday, January 31 confirmed the reopening of the Third Mainland Bridge and thanked the residents of Lagos State especially the ones affected for their understanding. He went further to urge Lagosians (people that recide in Lagos) to corporate with the government as it embarks on numerous rehabilitation projects in the State.
‘LASG hereby appeals to residents to cooperate with the state government as all other ongoing rehabilitation projects would come to an end in a very short while. The benefits, including safety, is for all and sundry.’ Frederic Oladeinde
