There are some women who seem to have it all; poised, well groomed and luck seems to always shine on them. Some women are ‘fighters’. These fighters are the ambitious ones who have earned every privilege and success with determination, wit and grit. Some women are overly ambitious and will do anything to get to and stay at the top. Some women are a little bit of each of the above. I am none of these women. If I were in a romantic novel or movie, I wouldn’t be the heroine, the terrible boss, the seductress or the sassy woman that helps the heroine save the day. Life isn’t so different from the movies for me. Who am I?  I am the character that provides comedic relief with her clumsiness; the one who is always falling and breaking things, whose clothes just don’t fit right no matter how hard she tries. I am the one portrayed as ugly or insecure (I am neither of the two by the way). If you fit into this category as well, you may also be tired of people trying to fix, help or handle your affairs for you as I am. We aren’t ‘mugus’ – as Nigerians like to refer to people who aren’t ‘smart’ – just a little different from the average girl. We struggle with doing things that others do or know naturally like coordination and organization. Well, this is the year I stop caring. If you don’t like my sense of style or lack of it, that is too bad. Maybe you should close your eyes. If I fall, I will pick myself up again like I always do and if a friend laughs or says “I told you so” or “You are too slow, I would have handled it better”, I am certainly cutting the ties to that relationship. This is the year I accept who I am – different not dumb, just a little clumsy. I will stop the struggle to conform and just be me. I may stumble on the way but I will get there in the end.   About the Writer: Rabiat Abdulkareem is a graduate of Chemistry from University of Ilorin. She is passionate about food, travel and books.
