Nigerian movies have become very popular globally, with several premiering in different cities all over the world. Now with the AMVCA 2018 awards done and dusted, here are the most talked about Nollywood movies this season. If you haven’t seen them already, then we recommend that you do.
Potato Potahto
This comedy movie is about a newly divorced couple who think they can share their ex-matrimonial home, but soon discover that that their seemingly ingenious idea is a disaster, as they scheme and plot to outdo each other and score points.
The cast includes OC Ukeje, Joselyn Dumas, JOKE SILVA, Chris Attoh, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Nikki Samonas, Adjetey Anang, Lala Akindoju, and Victoria Michaels.
The movie was screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2017 in France and was nominated in several categories at the AMVCA 2018.
Isoken
Isoken features an impressive list of actors among whom are Dakore Akande , Funke Akindele, Joseph Benjamin and Lydia Forson.
Isoken’s delayed marriage becomes a concern to everyone in the Osayande family as she nears thirty-four. She is beautiful, driven and successful, but just isn’t in a relationship. She is, however, soon pushed into a relationship to the “perfect husband material”, but when she meets Kelvin, she actually realises what it means to be in love.
This romantic comedy drama highlights cultural expectations and the influence of family in making critical decisions.
Tatu
Shot in picturesque locations in Ibadan and Lagos and, Tatu is a typical African epic adventure movie with a contemporary twist.
It explores the issues and complications that result from a woman’s quest to have her own baby.
The movie stars Toyin Aimakhu, Desmond Elliot, Segun Arinze and Gabriel Afolayan and was nominated for the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Production Design and Best Soundtrack, among others.
Children of Mud
The movie tells the story of a blind boy named Miracle and her sister who are sent packing from their aunty’s house after a misunderstanding.
The film was shot in in Lagos and Abeokuta, and is inspired by the numerous street children in various parts of Nigeria, most of whom hawk for a living and do not have decent accommodation.
It has a star-studded cast which include veteran actress Liz Benson, Bassey Ekpenyong and Matilda Obaseki.
Children of Mud is was written and directed by Imoh Umoren
Lotanna
Lotanna is the story of a young man who, after his father’s sudden death, discovers that he is left to bear the burden of his late father’s debt.
It is a epic African movie written by Kemi Adesoye and directed by Toka McBaror and George Sunom Kura.
The cast include Liz Benson, Jide Kososko, Chris Attoh, Chris okagbue, Kenturah King, Victor Olaotan, Meg Ontanwa, Ama K. Abebrese, Henry Adofo and Raymond Iorkohol.
Alter Ego
A lawyer, Ada Igwe, is bent on putting every child molester and sex offender behind bars, while dealing with the scars she bears from her own painful childhood experience.
The multiple award nominated movie, which stars Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde as Ada Igwe, was released in July 2017 (Nigeria).
It was directed by Moses Inwang and produced by Esther Oyibio.
