Nigeria is now ranked as one of three top football nations in Africa.
Nigeria senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, has moved up four places in the latest FIFA football rankings released on Thursday, February 10, 2022. The new ranking means Nigeria now occupies the 32nd spot in global football and third position in African football. Champions of the recently concluded 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, the Teranga Lions of Senegal are positioned 1st in Africa while 2021 AFCON quarterfinalists, the Atlas Lions of Morocco, sit in second place.

Prior to the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, Nigeria occupied the 36th spot in world football and the 5th spot in Africa behind Algeria and Tunisia. Following the group stage exit of Algeria after recording a draw and two defeats in the continental showpiece, Nigeria overtook the North African nation. Tunisia beat the Super Eagles in the second round of the competition after qualifying as best losers before being beaten by Burkina Faso in the quarterfinal. However, the Super Eagles were the only side that won all three games in the group stage of the tournament with victories over Egypt, and Guinea Bissau.

Nigeria will be looking to improve their position in global football when they confront Ghana in a two-legged 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers play-off against the Black Stars of Ghana. The first leg of the tie is scheduled to hold in Ghana on March 23, 2022, while the second leg of the encounter will hold on March 29 in Nigeria. Nigeria has made it to the World Cup on six occasions, while Ghana has featured in three editions of the global showpiece. Source: Complete Sports
