Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, issued this warning at a media briefing in Lagos. He said that the government could not assure of the state of the rice having spent months during transportation and in warehouses. He appealed to Nigerians to consume only locally-grown and processed rice. Mohammed disclosed that the illegally imported rice was gotten from Thailand and India and came into the country through its borders with Benin, Niger, and Cameroon.
