Nigeria’s fitness industry is booming. Over the past decade, numerous gyms and fitness centres have popped up in cities across the country. The first spark of this fledgeling movement appeared in the bigger metropolises, but there’s recently been a wave of gym openings in second-tier urban centres as well.

These establishments are serving a growing segment of the local population who want to look fit, and who know that their physical and mental wellbeing is partly dependent on their exercise routines. These people also enjoy the sense of worthwhile community that gyms provide. Fitness Plus caters to this population. This health, wellness, and fitness company extend its service beyond enabling weight loss and attractive musculature, to helping its customers to lead healthy lifestyles. It’s a relatively new business—it was set up in 2019. But it’s finding its fit in what is becoming a competitive industry, and holding its own against all the odds. The physical centre is located in the densely populated Yaba area of Lagos. This makes it accessible from most parts of urban Lagos. But the spread of gyms in the city means that visitors are more likely to be from the surrounding area. Onsite, Fitness Plus covers the exercise routines you would expect from a standard gym or fitness studio—cardiovascular, free weight, stretching and mobility, and functional fitness. Personal training is available as well.

Fitness Plus does offer online training classes on Zoom, which allows it to reach a wider audience. Intending participants can register for these sessions every month. Instructors can oversee a variety of workouts and fitness techniques, including cardio and yoga. Home services can also be provided. Individuals wishing to sign up for online classes may choose one of four monthly packages, ranging from the ‘Bronze’ program, with two zoom classes weekly and daily exercise schedule, to the ‘Gold’ offering with home service and personalized training. The price spreads for these services suggest that Fitness Plus caters to people from across the income spectrum. This counts in its favour; the increased enthusiasm for physical fitness in Nigeria isn’t only happening among the middle class. Fitness Plus intends to expand its customer base in the next few years. Setting up in multiple locations may be on the cards too. For now, it’s relying on technology to reach the world outside of its immediate environment. And as the market for its services grows, it should have even more people signing up for its programs.
