By Pamela Agboga From outside, the place looked calm and inviting. When I walked through the doors, there was only one customer busily polishing off the contents of his plate. While I made my enquiries, I looked around; the creamy green and orange décor of the hall was soothing on the nerves after the hot mid-day sun, and the restful music playing in the background only added to the nice ambience. Delta Kitchen is one restaurant that lives up to its name; the food is made with a Delta feel. The menu has a variety of dishes from the west and southern region, but the delta food remains their specialty. Snails, fresh fish, and seafood were very prominent on the menu. When asked why a delta kitchen had been opened in a western state and the extent of its success, the Manager of the Bode Thomas branch Mr. Enahoro Okhifo said “We just wanted to bring ‘home’ to those who are here and feel nostalgic for a taste of their native food. We have a lot of customers and they love what we do.” I had to try out the starch and banga soup with snail; apart from being one of their specialties it is one of my native meals, and I had missed it. The soup was served in the native earthenware plates the Urhobos of Delta State call evwere.  This native plate keeps soups hotter for longer, and made it a savoury meal. By the time I was through with my lunch, the place was bustling with customers. The servings of rice and beans that were delivered to the table beside me convinced me that customers got their money’s worth on the meals. Delta Kitchen   What I like about the place: Apart from the ambience, there are no special meals for days of the week; everything is available daily, so feel free to drop in whenever the craving for something homely hits you.
