Presentations were made by IT experts on cloud computing and cyber security. Opportunities of doing business using the cloud and the challenges of cyber security were discussed. Discussants were of the view that cloud computing would enhance SME business and government services, despite the challenges of cyber security.
Some of the resolutions reached include the following:
1. Nigerians must adopt a gradual approach to move their businesses to the cloud and ensure data protection while in cloud.
2. Cyber crime to cost the globe $6 trillion by 2021, according to Cybersecurity Ventures. Privacy and security concerns are barriers to the adoption of public cloud in Nigeria
3. Cyber space poses a lot of insecurity to cloud business, and regulatory bodies should see it as an opportunity to come up with policies to protect online business, since there is no network that can boast of full proof against cyberattacks and hacking.
4. The issue of bad image and cyberattacks in relation to business email compromise that are traced to Nigerians, was raised but discussants advised that Nigerians must build trust, integrity and develop the right skills to address negative report about Nigerians on cyber security, since cybercriminals come from every part of the world.
5. In spite of the cyber security challenges, local cloud business should be hosted locally, to encourage data localisation among Nigerian companies.
6. There is dire shortage of skills in cybersecurity. We need technical and non-technical skills to address cybersecurity issues.
7. Cloud Security Certification programmes are important. Businesses and individuals should strive to achieve and attain cybersecurity skills certification.
8. Major gap exits in Nigeria cybersecurity framework where no institution is taking ownership responsibility.
9. Non-disclosure of cybersecurity attacks among financial institutions and corporate organizations is posing serious challenges to the economy and should be discouraged.
10. Cybersecurity agents must be well equipped to enable them do more in addressing cybersecurity issues in the country.
11. Government should do more to increase awareness in data law to address cybersecurity issues, and also address the issue of porous cyber regulation. Nigeria therefore needs proper structure and regulation in cybersecurity issues. Nigeria still lacks laws that deal with data sovereignty
