The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) isn’t resigning itself to being swallowed up by rampant information and communication technology. It could be taking the e-commerce route to relevance, if the Postmaster General of the nation, Mr. Bisi Adegbuyi, gets what he says he wants for the public parcel delivery company.

Mr. Adebguyi, who spoke at the International Trade Fair currently taking place in Abuja, said that the advent of e-commerce in Nigeria brought with it an opportunity for NIPOST to keep itself afloat in the modern world. He chose to recast the predominantly dark predictions for NIPOST’s future in a positive light by pointing out that new technology would enable it to improve its service delivery and expand the scope of its operations. For him, taking a bite at the e-commerce cherry was the way to go if NIPOST was to grow its revenue base.

There was a talk from Mr. Adegbuyi of NIPOST’s operations being improved upon by tracking parcels from points of postage to points of delivery by deploying solutions afforded by ICT. However, there was no hint from him that NIPOST would be giving up on delivering letters; the Postmaster General insisted that the world had not ditched them, as they were still an important means of communication, even in the developed world. As far as he was concerned, NIPOST’s continuation of its letter and parcel delivery service would not cause it to go out of business. According to him, “ICT is positively complementing postal services as we can use ICT to fast track our mail and cause postal services to be at every doorstep with minimal delays”.

NIPOST could also be exploring the provision of banking services to rural communities that have little or no access to such services. Mr. Adegbuyi said that the shift in focus by banks to e-banking had carved out a possible space for the organization to fill. NIPOST could serve as agents to banks delivering e-banking services in rural areas where it has an established presence.
