Nigerian Filmmaker, Fidelis Duker, has been contracted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Ethiopian Film Producers and Distributors Association to help grow the country’s film industry. The accomplished Nigerian filmmaker was engaged to build the country’s fledging film industry, having made immense contributions to the growth and current status of the industry in his home country Nigeria.

Track record

Duker is the founder and festival director of the Abuja International film and Video Festival – arguably the largest film festival in the country – the Regional Secretary General (West Africa) of the Federation of Pan African Filmmakers (FEPAC), the former president of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, and recipient of the lifetime achievement awards for special contribution to the development of Nollywood (Best of Nollywood Awards 2016). He has been in the film industry for over twenty years, from writing scripts for the children’s folktales TV program Tales By Moonlight between 1988 and 1992, writing scripts for television dramas to working as a production manager until 1991 when he left to start his own production. Duker is credited with over 250 Nigerian home movies. Duker said, confirming the report:
“I will be consulting for the government for the next couple of years in building a vibrant film industry like Nollywood.”
He will be expected to strengthen the country’s film industry by introducing development initiatives and enlightenment programs as well as assist the government with creating the regulatory framework required for the industry to thrive. Only last week, he met with some of the major stake holders in Addis Ababa, where he presented a paper on the required intervention to strengthen the country’s film policy, presenting the roadmap for the industry under his watch. His appointment is expected to put the Ethiopian film industry on a new pedestal.
