All is set for the maiden edition of the Emerging Telecoms Technologies Research and ICT Innovation Forum under the auspices of Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), to be held at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall by University of Lagos Guest House, University of Lagos, Lagos State.
The event is slated to hold from 10th to 11th June , 2019. The colloquy is in a bid by the NCC to further develop Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.
Major players/actors in the Nigeria tech ecosystem are presented a unique opportunity/platform to consider and recommend plans, policies, framework or strategies that would foster the growth of the sector with drive towards improving local content in the ICT/Telecommunication division.
Developing Nigeria’s Tech Ecosystem
According to press release by the NCC, the theme ‘Developing Nigeria’s Tech Ecosystem; Imperative for Improving Local Content’, is in line with the commission’s commitment to promoting ICT innovation and investment opportunities, and facilitating strategic collaboration and partnership. Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta, noted that moves towards developing the ecosystem will be the focal point at the inaugural edition of the meeting. Consequently, the gathering is a boost in the approach and efforts made in adding quality to the country’s ecosystem.
The two-day collaborative stakeholders’ affair is filled with interesting programs for attendees. The first day is tasked with identifying the gaps in the ICT/Telecoms sector and, the strengthening of collaboration between stakeholders and the Nigeria Communications Commission. Solution to identified gaps in the sector from the previous day of the occasion will be the focus of the second day with a breakout session for discussion. The fact that the forum is not bent on just pointing out problems but equally suggesting solutions is great evidence of the uniqueness attached to it.
TECH Stakeholders
The gathering is expected to have stakeholders drawn from the Nigeria tech ecosystem in attendance. Groups such as Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and Tech hubs, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Professional Associations in the Information Communication Technology sector, Consumer Advocacy Groups, and representatives from the financial sector are equally hoped to be in attendance. The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC is billed to address these groups during the programme which is believed to be first among other editions to follow in years. The meeting is proof of Nigeria’s willingness to grow in a 21st century that is technologically driven.
The Chief Executive Officer of telecommunications services company Main One, Funke Opeke, will present a lead paper on the forum’s theme. There will also be a discourse on ‘Digital Skills Imperative for Retooling National Workforce and Developing Capacities for Future Work: Innovation Hubs as the Fulcrum of Local Content Development, Digital Inclusion, Employment and National Survivability.’
Panelists for the three segments of the two-day showpiece include; Professor Francis Idachaba, Director of Academic Planning at Covenant University Ota, Ogun State, the Dean Faculty of Technology, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Osun State, Professor G. Aderounmu, and the Director of Legal and Regulatory Services Department, NCC, Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye.
The two-day affair is expected to assist in fixing the numerous problems confronting Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. Nigeria’s drive and push to become technologically sound in a digitalized world is outstanding. Without a doubt, the most populous black nation on earth will soon hit remarkable and incredible heights in the technological ecosystem community. The Emerging Telecoms Technologies Research and ICT Innovation is just the beginning.
