There’s no denying that we have little to no control over the things that happen to us early in life. We don’t choose our parents, our schools, or where we grew up. To a large extent, most of the situations we find ourselves in when we’re children are determined by those who serve as our authority figures (parents, teachers, clergymen, etc).

We experience things we don’t deserve, that are beyond our control, and aren’t our fault. As a result, when we become adults, we develop a strong tendency to blame others for our misfortunes. However, if we don’t take ownership and develop a positive attitude, we might reach a point of no return. The first phase of our lives was out of our control but it is up to us to determine how the story ends.

Stop The Blame Game

To own your life, you must take notice of this attitude and stop it dead in its tracks. Remember that whenever you face a problem, you have a part to play in getting yourself out of that situation. Blaming others for your problems leads to a victim mentality, which makes you feel powerless and weak to take action. If you see yourself pointing fingers at others, pause and ask yourself: “What can I learn from this? What’s the bigger picture?”

Strive To Solve Problems

One quality that comes naturally to humans is problem-solving. For thousands of years, humans have been adept at coming up with creative solutions whenever needed. Necessity is, after all, the mother of invention. If something matters to you, you will find a way despite any obstacles in your way. When next you’re faced with a challenge, instead of giving up and burying your head in the sand by saying “I can’t”, try saying something different: “How can I?”

Hold Yourself Accountable

Because taking ownership is not easy, it is important to hold yourself accountable to others. When you’re accountable to someone, you’re also able to build a sense of accountability to yourself. This can also provide you with succour in difficult times, by ensuring you don’t go back to your old habits. You can hold yourself accountable to someone you look up to, a friend, or a community of like-minded individuals.

Embrace Discomfort

Failing to take ownership of your life is an indication of never having to step outside of your comfort zone. When you keep living inside your comfort zone, you never get the chance to improve as a person. Don’t be afraid to fail. At first, you may fail a few times when you try something new. And that’s okay. Life is all about failing, learning from the failure, and changing your approach. Featured Image Source: Highbrow Magazine
