But how do we build mental toughness? How do we fashion our personality into a buffer against the curveballs that life tosses at us? Here are seven things you can do to toughen up on the inside.

Face Your Challenges Head-On

The first step to becoming mentally tougher is to recognize that there’s a challenge and that you need to face it. No one will tackle it for you. This might ignite fear within you, but it doesn’t have to. Instead of letting the fear overwhelm you, recognize that your challenge isn’t insurmountable. You’re no different from any other human who has faced this sort of thing. If they conquered their problems, you can too.

Break Challenges into Small Manageable Pieces

Instead of plunging headlong into the challenge, you can take on a little piece of it at a time. With each chunk you solve, your confidence grows, and you’re riled up to deal with the next part.

Pursue Purpose

If the life-course you’re taking is driven by a purpose that grips you, it’ll be easier for you to confront the obstacles that crop up on the way. Your passion can be the fuel that powers you past those blocks. The stronger your conviction about it, the less fazed you’ll be by the things that try to hinder your progress.

Cultivate a Positive Mindset

It’s amazing how much our vision of the world around us can change when we develop a positive mindset. Problems become learning curves or stepping stones. Having a positive mindset could enable you to scale the big hurdles of life.

Practice Contentment

It’s easy to get demoralized when we try to compare our progress through life to another person’s journey. If we constantly measure the success of our peers against our failures, we could descend into despair. But no two persons are ‘supposed’ to take the same path in life. Everyone runs at their pace. Be patient, contented, and expectant, as you work things out in your own lane.

Keep Your Standards High

While you want to be contented with what you have, don’t settle for less than you know you can achieve. Aim as high as your abilities can allow. Have your sights fixed on the top prize, and you’ll be more likely to ignore distractions on the path to attaining it.

Visualize Success

When you have a mental picture of what succeeding would look like, you will be inspired to put in the effort required to achieve it.

Final Words

The key to building mental toughness is imbibing habits that enable us to see the good in our present circumstance and ignite a desire for an even better future. The steps we’ve shared here are sure ways to cultivate these habits. Featured Image Source: Lightspring-shutterstock
