We all procrastinate from time to time, whether it’s pushing off a deadline to create more time for work or to take a break. Sadly, procrastination is a part of life. However, it becomes a problem when we start lagging on every little thing and can’t seem to maintain the right amount of focus for productivity.

If you struggle with debilitating procrastination, here are some ways to beat it and increase how much you get done. Give Yourself A Little Push When you feel unmotivated, you may think that you can’t take any step towards your goal. The solution here is to take the smallest possible step. Once you do this, you bypass the part of your brain that is resistant to change. For instance, you can decide to read just two pages of a book instead of planning to read a whole chapter. You’d be more likely to keep going than if you never started reading the book at all. Set A Hard Deadline For Yourself We’re often more motivated to complete a task when we’re running out of time. Going by this logic, you can set hard deadlines to complete tasks you’ve been procrastinating on and treat the deadlines the same as you would if it was assigned to you by your boss. You’d be surprised at the speed at which you complete the task and how much easier it appears to be.

Trick Your Brain To Like Doing The Hard Stuff

One of the reasons why we procrastinate is because sometimes the end goal seems beyond our scope of what is possible. We may visualise and work towards it but if the goal seems too large for us, it may end up being what we don’t want it to be: a fantasy. An effective way to overcome this is to change your identity. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should take up a new name or relocate to a new country. It means to change your perspective of yourself in relation to your goals. For instance, instead of fantasising about your dream body, start seeing yourself as an active person who loves to work out. This is such a powerful mindset to have because it programs your brain to stop seeing your task at hand as just another boring chore, rather, as something that is part of your identity. In this way, you’re able to get rid of a lot of mental resistance towards completing the task.

Reward Yourself For Completed Tasks

Giving ourselves incentives can serve as great motivation to accomplish the things we hate doing. This could be as simple as rewarding yourself with your favourite TV show after completing a task. Incentives go a long way in making your task less daunting. Featured Image Source: Harold Taylor
