To achieve success in your chosen career, it’s important to connect (and stay connected) with people who can add value to you. In the office setting, your colleagues are the peers you need to link up with; and those in your line of work are your peers outside the four walls of your workplace. Your success shouldn’t be the mainstay of any existing network or relationship; everyone’s success is equally as important.  We’re all in this rat race together – and while the office politicians may tell us differently – we need to keep each other running in order to achieve communal, long lasting success. Now that we’ve established the importance of networking, here are certain key steps to take into consideration to make it a success: 1. Put yourself out there: Yes, this is easier said than done – especially for introverts like myself. But to succeed at networking, you need to have a network in the first place and this requires stepping out of your comfort zone to meet people. In the office, try speaking to colleagues you are yet to be acquainted with. Outside the office, attend conferences and other networking events for professionals in your line of work. 2. Learn more about the people in your existing network: It’s important to fully know the personal interests and professional goals of these individuals. Since these interests tend to change with time, strive to stay updated. This helps with great engagement in the short and long run. 3. Keep information flowing: In today’s society, knowledge is power. The more knowledge you have in your existing network, the better off everyone – including yourself – will be. Be there to give advice to your peers and be humble enough to ask for advice in return. If you find useful information that can help a peer out in the pursuit of his goals, be quick to share. This keeps you in the forefront of their minds, making them more willing to return the favour in the future.     About the Writer: Ify Halim is a young Creative and a promoter of values through the force that is writing.  Follow her on twitter: @MissHalim
