There’s something about African designs that jumps out at people.  They tend to be a lively mix of colours and patterns, so varied and vibrant that they immediately capture our visual sense. We marvel at the best of them as we might at the sparkle of gems.

Jade Crystal Crafts

There’s a business latching on to this space between locally themed designs and the glint of precious stones. Jade Crystal Crafts, a Lagos-based fashion accessories dealer, sells clothes, shoes and bags that are quintessentially African in form and design. These items look modern as well, in their infusion of recognizably western accessories with traditional styles. Jade Crystal Crafts does have a target market: lovers of “eclectic, urban and stylish African accessories.” So says Akinwande Omowunmi Davies, who founded and currently heads the venture. She describes her customers as classy individuals who want to stand out from the crowd. Wunmi figures that her business’s unabashedly African take on fashion suits them well. There’s a showcase for Jade Crystal Crafts’ offerings on Instagram. The page is an interesting mix of clothes, shoes, bags and other complenentary wares, designed with a touch that appeals to people from across the country. Some of the products have familiar patterns on them; others are a bold marriage of motifs that are somewhat non-conformist, but impressive nonetheless.
According to Wunmi, Jade Crystal Crafts takes orders from all parts of Nigeria, and has a delivery system which is capable of shipping to other countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. When asked what doing business on Instagram has been like, Wunmi, who describes herself as a mother and serial entrepreneur, says it has been “a roller coaster”. But she’s pleased with the high points she’s reached with it. Click here to visit Jade Crystal Crafts’ Instagram page.
