A career according to the Oxford dictionary is an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress. So changing a career isn’t a big deal but going about it the right way is pertinent. I remember, as a 5-year old I wanted to be an actress, later on, I wanted to be a musician, at some point I wanted to be a doctor, this is all so funny because I’m grown up now, I’m faring very well and I’m not on any of those career paths, it happens that way for a lot of people and that is just due to change in interest and the kind of exposure one has.  As growth happens and the days roll by there are higher chances of change in interest, the desire for a better life, the yearning for a hobby to become professional and become a career, the need for more income et al, all of this could result in a change of career. The question now is, how best should you go about the career change process, here are a few steps that should help you as you go about changing your career:
  • Know what you really want

This is the foremost and most important aspect when it comes to making any decision and the decision of changing career isn’t left out. This would start by knowing who you really are, your personality, your likes and dislikes and some other basic things about yourself. Take some time out to know what you really want and put your answers down.
  • Make out the reason behind changing your career

You should have a slated reason behind your decision of a change in career, it could be either how tasking it is, how tiring it is, how it affects your mental health or how it lowers your self-esteem, just ensure there’s a valid reason behind your decision of a change. This is important as it would help you avoid getting into a career path that is worse

  • Analyse the reason behind choosing your present career initially

What made you opt for the career initially? Was it out of pressure? Or no better options? Or out of genuine interest or love, take some time to think back, this would really help your decision making as you delve into a new career.
  • Evaluate how much your career has fit into your lifestyle and your ability to adapt to the lifestyle

A change in career might just be a total change in lifestyle. I heard of a man who still went to the office a day after his retirement, after his morning routine, he was all dressed up and he went off to work totally forgetting that he had retired, that sounds crazy but that depicts how much of his career has been inculcated into his lifestyle. You need to evaluate this yourself and have a glimpse of how much of your lifestyle will be affected when you change your career
  • Highlight the privileges you’ll love your new career to come with

What is it you want your new career to come with, it could be freedom, it could less stress, it could be paid leaves, this would be easier for you when you’ve adhered to the first step stated above of knowing what you really want.
  • Look at available options and make your choice of a new career

You should be on the lookout for jobs already and you should have quite a number of them around, based on the evaluations you made adhering to the steps previously mentioned you should know which is best for you. Featured Image Source: Real Business
