Federal Government Kicks Off Horticulture Training in Six Schools

With the objective to drive the economic empowerment of youths through agricultural entrepreneurship, the Federal Government – via the platform of the National Schools Agricultural Programme (NSAP), which was set up in October 2014 – has flagged off another workshop targeting the younger generation. The workshop which focused on horticulture training for students of the six pilot schools, was organized in collaboration with Dizengoff Nigeria Ltd, to help boost the Nigerian youth’s competence and confidence in farming. Speaking at the training which took place in Abuja, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on NSAP, Dr. Baraka Sani, explained that the NSAP was developed as an after-school programme using the non-formal system of education, and will be implemented in 36 selected schools across 12 pilot states through the establishment of the Student Agricultural Clubs (SACs). “In all the pilot schools our students have been actively involved in piloting the affairs of these clubs and I am happy to announce that we have over 4000 students as members of these clubs. We have strategically structured the NSAP operations in such a dynamic way that students can benefit from the wealth of experience of the organizer private sector and development partners as well as take advantage of government existing structures,” Dr. Sani said. The participating schools for the workshop were selected from the FCT, Kaduna and Kano State.
