The Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria – established in 1989 is a recognized professional body promoting, marketing, and developing the Nigerian Art and Fashion Culture. Last year, the not-for-profit association staged an international fashion fair that was preceded by donations of clothing materials to 5,000 displaced children in different IDP camps across the country. According to the president – Mrs. Funmi Ajila Ladipo, the goal this year will center more on capacity building for young fashion designers who will be exposed to new trends in the industry, as we empower them to become real partners in the fashion value chain.” At a press conference that was held recently, Mrs. Funmi Ajila further explained that this year’s theme  – “A Stitch In Time” was carefully crafted to demonstrate the essence of making hay, while the sun still shines. She further revealed that the event will go beyond the runway and entertainment, to pursue a new direction in youth empowerment; and also aims to prove that the organization is ready to take the world in giant strides by repositioning the fashion industry as a viable profession that has contributed immensely to the nation’s economy through empowerment and gainful exposure to international best practices. The two-day event, sponsored by Da Viva, Lagos State Government, Fan Milk and CMC Connect among others, is expected to see about 25 designers grace the runway. Some of the skills to be covered during the master-classes & workshops include but not limited to Garment Manufacturing, Millinery, Bag Making, Footwear Production, Jewelry & Bead Making, Illustration & Fine Art, Pattern Making, Modelling, Digi-Fashion, Merchandising amongst several others.
