Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Cole’s early life was far from luxurious. He grew up in a middle-class family and received his primary education at Methodist Primary School in Yola. His academic prowess shone through, earning him a scholarship to the prestigious Federal Government College Enugu, where his leadership qualities began to blossom. Driven by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a difference, Cole pursued a degree in accounting from the University of Lagos. Upon graduation, he landed a job at Shell Petroleum Development Company, where he honed his skills in finance and administration. However, the corporate world felt stifling to his entrepreneurial spirit. In 1994, with a vision to fill a gap in the Nigerian energy sector, he took the bold step of venturing out on his own. With a meagre $5,000 and a burning desire to succeed, Cole founded Sahara Group. He started small, focusing on the supply of diesel to local businesses. His entrepreneurial instinct, coupled with his meticulous planning and integrity, quickly propelled Sahara Group forward.

The path to success wasn’t without its challenges. In 1998, the Nigerian government, in a bid to control the oil industry, introduced policies that threatened the very existence of the Sahara Group. Cole, however, refused to be daunted. He adopted a strategic approach, diversifying the company’s portfolio to include other energy services and expanding its reach beyond Nigerian borders. Over the years, Sahara Group has evolved into a global energy and infrastructure conglomerate, with operations spanning across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. It boasts a diverse portfolio of businesses, including oil and gas exploration, production, and trading, power generation and distribution, and infrastructure development. Cole’s success goes beyond business. He is a passionate philanthropist and a strong advocate for sustainability. Through the Sahara Foundation, he supports various initiatives focusing on education, healthcare, and environmental protection. He also serves on the board of several prestigious organizations, including the World Economic Forum and the African Leadership Academy. Looking back at his remarkable journey, Cole attributes his success to a combination of factors. He had a clear vision for the future and the determination to make it a reality. He was willing to put in countless hours of hard work and dedication to achieve his goals. He built his business on a foundation of strong ethics and transparency. He constantly sought out new opportunities and was not afraid to take calculated risks. He surrounded himself with talented and dedicated individuals who shared his vision and values.
