BlackBerry’s CEO, John Chen, expresses the possibility of BlackBerry becoming entirely a software company; this may imply the end of production of popular BlackBerry phones.
“Our new mobility solutions strategy is showing signs of momentum”, CEO John Chen had said, “including our first major device software licensing agreement with a telecom joint venture in Indonesia. Under this strategy, we are focusing on software development, including security and applications. The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital.”
If Nigerians remember vividly, there was a time BlackBerry device users posed the eloquence found usually among most IPhone users today. Praised mostly for its efficient data consumption ability, the operating system became popular and highly recommended among Nigerians. However, over the years, its relevance has decreased significantly owing to the rise of more advanced and functional operating systems like Android. This trend has smartly been recognized by the company and hence the shift in supply to areas where they are undisputable experts at, security.
BlackBerry, known for its extra security measures to ensure the safety of its users’ data (which may be annoying at times) is moving in the direction of software development to ensure yet another groundbreaking improvement in technology. This does not, however, imply the end of the company but a displacement of function “The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners”, said CEO John Chen.
The company claims to still have strong finance and soon maybe at a blockbuster that will ignite the love of millions love for the system again. “We are reaching an inflection point with our strategy. Our financial foundation is strong, and our pivot to software is taking hold”, affirmed the CEO.
