Here are some steps you can take to strengthen this important quality in your relationships.

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is defined as the ability to recognize and comprehend one’s own feelings as well as the impact one has on others. Without self-awareness, you can’t develop the other traits that result in emotional intelligence. Develop the habit of identifying your emotions and understanding why you’re feeling them. A great way to do this is by being mindful.

Self-Regulation

Self-regulation is the ability to manage your emotions and behaviours. This comes after self-awareness. People who are good at self-regulating are able to pause and analyse their emotions when in uncomfortable situations. This prevents them from making rash decisions and acting impulsively. They’re often optimistic and sure of themselves.

Social Skills

Social skills make it easier to deal with people and make you more likeable. It’s no surprise it’s one of the traits of emotionally intelligent people. Someone with good social skills finds it easy to manage conflicts, influence others, and engage in teamwork.

If you have poor social skills, you can develop them by practising. Join clubs where you can meet new people. Take up a job that requires you to interact with people every day. Join groups like toastmasters. Given the extent to which social skills can positively impact your life, they are worth developing.

Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand the emotions behind other people’s actions. Being empathetic means you’re able to understand what people are saying by listening to them, showing them that you’re approachable, and being able to put yourself in their shoes. Empathy is a lifelong skill, so it’s another trait that can be practised if it does not come naturally to you.
