I’m not a fan of bread. While growing up, we often served plain bread and tea at breakfast. Eggs, sardine and butter were luxuries, not because our parents couldn’t afford to buy it but because of the typical African way of not allowing children to get used to sweet things. Since I often lacked the desire to eat plain bread, I resorted to eating any leftover from the previous day’s meal at breakfast.

But whenever our bread is packaged differently, I jejeli dump the leftover for bread. Who will blame me? The transformative power of packaging is nothing short of extraordinary. When ordinary bread becomes toast, the taste upgrades. But when it is served with fried eggs or a slathering of butter, sardine, butter and sardine mix, jam, the taste is mad oh! Well, our topic for today is how to make toast without a toaster. I’m sure some people will be like, how can this be? Well, your job is to wonder while mine is to show you that it can be done. So, nwanne, pull up a chair and let me show you three ways to do this.

Bread Toast with Frying pan

I really like this method; some will say it’s local but na them sabi. It works and that’s all that matters. For this method, I’ll be using the egg and sardine mix. So, simply open and pour sardine into a bowl. Break eggs into another soup bowl and whisk. Mix the sardine and the eggs together. Next, place a clean frying pan on medium heat. When it’s hot, add butter to the heated pan and wait for it to melt. Dip the bread into the egg and sardine mix one side after another. Then fry the slice on both sides till they are golden brown. Repeat the process with as many slices as you want.  Serve with tea or soft drink.

Slow Toasting in the Oven

Butter and sardine mix is one of my best bread fillings and I’ll be using it to show you how slow toasting works.

The first step in slow toasting is to preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then butter the bread with the butter and sardine mix. Place the bread on a baking sheet and slide it onto the middle rack; please note that placing the bread on this centrally located rack will help it to toast evenly. Close the oven and after about 5 minutes, check to see if the bread is golden brown. Flip the bread, close the oven and toast the other side till it’s golden brown. Take the bread out of the oven. Turn off the heat and serve hot.

Quick Toasting in the Broiler

For those who do not know, the broiler is in the oven. I’ll be using the butter and sardine mix for this method as well. So, if you want to try it, you need to move your oven rack to the topmost rung as the broiler is located near the top of the oven. Set the oven to broil. If it has a high and low button, set it on high and give the broiler five minutes to warm up. Butter your bread with butter and sardine mix. Once the oven is heated, place the bread on a baking sheet and slide it into the top rack so that it’s nearest to the heat. After 2 minutes, check to see if the bread is golden brown and flip to the other side. These are the three other ways to toast bread. You can make breakfast more interesting for your family by trying one of these methods of bread toasting. Featured Image Source: Archana’s Kitchen
