21 Security Tips for Driving on Nigerian Roads

In recent weeks, there have been several instances of armed robberies on Lagos roads, to the detriment of fellow Nigerians. Major hotspots at the moment include Third Mainland Bridge, Costain-Eko Bridge, Apapa, Oshodi and Isolo. While we stay hopeful that the government will soon intervene, it is important that we implement the right precautionary measures in the meantime. Protect yourselves and your loved ones with these expert security tips: 1. Always be alert while driving, and extra vigilant of your surroundings. 2. When driving at night or in traffic, ensure that all car windows are wound up and doors are locked at all times. 3. Don’t change flat tyres on an isolated road. Instead, look for the nearest secured car park or petrol station. 4. Using your rear and side view mirrors, check at regular intervals to ensure you’re not be followed by suspicious cars or people . 5. Make sure all bags and laptops are away from sight in your vehicle. 6. Always park your car in secured parking lots. 7. When returning to your parked car, inspect the lot to ensure no one is loitering around your vehicle. 8. Avoid offering strangers lifts as much as possible. 9. Avoid buying items from street hawkers as much as possible. 10. Avoid seating in your car when it breaks down, especially when you’re driving alone. Step out of the car and wait for assistance at the nearest public point. 11. Avoid driving alone as much as possible. 12. Avoid trying to retaliate when a suspicious car overtakes you. Instead, change lanes or use an alternative route. 13. Avoid carrying laptops and other expensive gadgets in public. 14. Avoid answering phone calls while driving, particularly at night. 15. Avoid traffic-prone areas as much as possible. 16. Avoid wearing gold or flashy jewelry as much as possible. 17. Avoid turning on your inner car light, particularly at night. 18. Avoid sitting at the extreme back of the vehicle as a bus passenger. 19. Avoid driving on side lanes especially in traffic jams. 20. Always have an emergency pepper/mouth spray ready at arm’s length in your car. 21. Always have a dummy phone or wallet at arm’s length in your car.
