The Blinken first trip to Africa, which is a virtual meeting via audio-visual means, is also a new development as previous such meetings have mainly been conducted physically with the SoS visiting Nigeria physically. In a statement from the US State Department on Monday, part of the matters to discuss comprise the raging security and economic issues confronting Nigeria.
“Blinken’s meeting with Buhari will underscore our shared goals of strengthening democratic governance, building lasting security, and promoting economic ties and diversification,”
He will also be looking at underpinning the Nigerian diaspora in the United States, in order to amplify and strengthen their ties with the home country by underscoring America’s shared goals of strengthening democratic governance, building lasting security, and promoting economic ties. Another branch of the Blinken virtual visit concerns a health partnership event where Blinken is expected to meet with a Nigerian health care worker. to underscore our collaboration to combat the pandemic as well as long-term U.S. investments in combatting infectious diseases.

Meanwhile, the virtual tour Secretary Blinken is engaging also extends to a complementary meeting with Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI) alumni in Nigeria. In a session tagged “Ten Questions with Tony” event, YALI alumni will have an opportunity to engage with Blinken on topics such as what the role of youth in the future of Africa, economic development, democracy and good governance, climate change, and health holds. By engaging YALI, the United States diplomatic desk is looking to involving the public, private sector, and civil society partners directly as an alternative to helping initiatives that will let Africa grow via creativity, innovativeness, and energy solutions. After all, civil society groups are more directly involved with the people even more than the government is nowadays. And as for the meeting with Buhari and Geoffrey Onyeama initiatives for better engaging the diaspora will become more productive and beneficial. On the other hand, there is virtually nothing else the United States government can do to directly help improve the security situation and worsening economic indices without the Buhari administration firstly admitting that it has a huge responsibility on its neck.
