- The Federal Government has commenced the design of five billion dollar Trans-Nigeria Gas Pipeline targeted at delivering gas to northern and eastern parts of the country. This is contained in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) bulletin volume 48. The bulletin stated that David Ige, the group executive director, gas and power of the NNPC, announced this when he spoke with its correspondent in Abuja.
- Lagos Island stood still as President Goodluck Jonathan flagged off his re-election campaign in the nation’s former federal capital. Supporters of the party’s governorship candidates in the South-West, who were bused in for the function, also seized the opportunity to show off their principals on poster boards.
- The price of oil has now dropped more than 40 per cent from “a peak of $107 in June”, prompting the conclusion by the Geneva-based International Air Transport Association, IATA, that net “profit of airlines worldwide would rise to $25 billion (15.9 billion pounds) in 2015, giving a profit margin of 3.2 per cent.” IATA represents around 250 airlines accounting for 84 per cent of global air traffic.
- Manchester City‘s Yaya Toure has been named the African Player of the Year 2014 by the Confederation of African Football at an awards ceremony held in Lagos on Thursday evening. The Ivoirian won the title for a fourth straight time beating off competition from local favourite Vincent Enyeama and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the title.
- Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, yesterday signed the 2015 budget of N489.69 billion into law. The event took place at the State House, Marina in Lagos. This is the first time the governor will sign the budget into law outside the office and in an unofficial period.
- The United States has told the Nigerian government to ensure that all registered voters are allowed to participate in the next month’s general election, saying it strongly supports a free, transparent, credible, inclusive and non-violent electoral process. U.S stated that the elections present Nigerians with a golden opportunity to demonstrate its lasting commitment to democratic values and institutions.
- Tinsel actress, Matilda Obaseki, and hubby, Arnold Mozia, welcomed their second baby boy on January 1, 2015. It was finally confirmed when she shared the pictures of the cute baby boy on Instagram. She says her son, Chiwetel Aart Mozia, was the fastest delivery ever.
- A new managing director has been appointed for the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC), the largest oil producing company in the country. He is Osagie Okunbor and takes over from Mutiu Sunmonu who is retiring after 36 years of service.
