TED Talks provide an amazing avenue for people around the world to listen to some of the world’s brightest, most inspirational and most accomplished individuals the world over. Several African speakers have featured and shared their ideas over time and we thought we would share our top 5 all time favorites. Many of them are most likely familiar to our readers, most especially Chimamanda Adichie’s “The Danger of a Single Story” which has been shared and reshared across the web. However, it doesn’t hurt to inspire ourselves again and so without much a-do, here is a list of our top 5 Africa focused TED Talks. George Ayittey on Cheetahs vs. Hippos About this talk Ghanaian economist George Ayittey unleashes a torrent of controlled anger toward corrupt leaders in Africa — and calls on the “Cheetah generation” to take back the continent.
Economist George Ayittey sees Africa’s future as a fight between Hippos — complacent, greedy bureaucrats wallowing in the muck — and Cheetahs, the fast-moving, entrepreneurial leaders and citizens who will rebuild Africa.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala: Want to help Africa? Do business here We know the negative images of Africa — famine and disease, conflict and corruption. But, says Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, there’s another, less-told story happening in many African nations: one of reform, economic growth and business opportunity.
Chimamanda Adichie: The danger of a single story Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice — and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.
Inspired by Nigerian history and tragedies all but forgotten by recent generations of westerners, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novels and stories are jewels in the crown of diasporan literature.
Ory Okolloh on becoming an activist Ory Okolloh tells the story of her life and her family — and how she came to do her heroic work reporting on the doings of Kenya’s parliament. Later on, she went on to co-found the renowned Kenyan crowdsourcing platform, Ushahidi and is currently Google’s Policy Manager for Africa
Andrew Mwenda takes a new look at Africa In this provocative talk, journalist Andrew Mwenda asks us to reframe the “African question” — to look beyond the media’s stories of poverty, civil war and helplessness and see the opportunities for creating wealth and happiness throughout the continent.
Journalist Andrew Mwenda has spent his career fighting for free speech and economic empowerment throughout Africa. He argues that aid makes objects of the poor — they become passive recipients of charity rather than active participants in their own economic betterment.
