- Identify your target audience: This cannot be over flogged. Liken social media to a physical market location in Nigeria. An organized market would have sections for fresh food items, different from sections for processed food items. Unless you don’t desire to purchase exactly what you need, you would be left with no choice but to visit the section that has exactly what you are looking for. This is the exact scenario with social media platforms. What kind of audience would you find in one platform? When this question is sincerely answered, then you will make untold progress.
- Research your competitors: Although there is an edge when you are a pioneer in a field, there is also an edge when you join an already existing market. This is because you get to learn from the mistakes of people who have been in the same line of business. Thorough research on your competitors, you identify where the customers in your line of business are. This helps save time and puts you at an advantage.
- Establish your presence on all social media platforms: Establishing your presence does not mean you become active on 5 platforms at a time. It means you set up your business name on all intended and present social media platforms, then watch out which of them stands you out or suits your business the most. With this experimentation, you can make an informed choice on a platform to align with.

- Think Growth and Long term: Envision your long term business plan and consider if the platform will accommodate it. For instance, you might be a blogger looking forward to doing podcasts in the future. You could consider a platform that is constantly evolving and can accommodate such futuristic plans. Also, consider the creation and distribution of digital content in picking a platform.
- Own your platform: As promising as infiltrating the social media space is for your business, nothing should replace owning your own website or platform that helps you achieve your online goals on your own terms. Social media platforms are subject to changes endorsed by the platform creators which may or may not favour your business venture. As you establish your social media presence, also seek knowledge on operating your own platforms, so you are never at a loss in case of unforeseen circumstances.
