An unfinished version of this inspiring song was earlier posted on Teni’s social media, however, the song was not officially released until her 25th birthday on 23rd December 2018.

The official music video is a compilation of various pieces previously posted online by the singer, including shows she performed at, as well as funny skits from before becoming a music star. It was most likely inspired by her outstanding success – her leap from being a struggling entertainer, to an internationally recognized A-list artiste within a very short period of time.

She signed on to Dr. Dolor Entertainment in 2017, and her career blew through the roof soon after that, even though industry pundit had said she couldn’t succeed as a singer, because she didn’t have the right body type. Teni’s most popular songs include ‘Askamaya’, and ‘Case’ which were some of the hottest mega hits of 2018.

The business administration graduate is not just a prolific songwriter and singer, she also raps and drums. She was named Most Promising Act to Watch at the 2018 Nigerian Entertainment Awards and won the Rookie of the Year Award at the Headies Awards the same year.

‘Uyo Meyo’ is predominantly rendered in her mother tongue, a version of the Yoruba peculiar to the Ondo people of southwestern Nigeria. If like me you have ever wondered what she was saying in the song, here are the lyrics with a translation below.

Lyrics

Dr. Dolor Entertainment

Kajo kajo kajo (Let us always dance)

kayo kayo kayo (Let us always dance)

Uyo Meyo leun o san o kan mi o e (I rejoiced with you, and now it’s my time to rejoice)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

O Uyo (O joy)

Uyo Meyo leun o san o kan mi o e (I rejoiced with you, and now it’s my time to rejoice)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

Eh Uyo (Eh joy)

Uyo Meyo leun o san o kan mi o e (I rejoiced with you, and now it’s my time to rejoice)

Everybody’s born a winner

If only you just believe yea eh yea eh

Close your eyes and come and see

Don’t you worry about a thing nah

Cause if you work hard

You can get it if you work

If you strive hard

You can be just what you want

If you work hard

You can climb the mountain top

Cos nothing is too small

And nothing is too big

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

O Uyo (O joy)

Uyo Meyo leun o san o kan mi o e (I rejoiced with you, and now it’s my time to rejoice)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

O Uyo (O joy)

Uyo Meyo leun o san o kan mi o e (I rejoiced with you, and now it’s my time to rejoice)

Eh yeh

What my eyes have seen, eyeh

Oun to ju mi ti ri ah, eyeh (What my eyes have seen, eyeh)

Don’t let them tell you “You Can’t”

And they won’t help you, just so you know

Just keep on pushing oh oh uh oh

Ibi ti Daddy mi o de (Where my father couldnt reach)

Ma de be ma tu koja (I will get there and surpass)

Ibi ti Mummy mi o de (Where my mother couldnt reach)

Ma de be ma tu koja (I will get there and surpass)

Ori ori mi jowo (Oh my goodness, i beg you)

Ori la no okan mi o (My head pave way for my thoughts)

Ori ehhhh mi masun (My spirit stay active)

Yea eh yea

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

O Uyo (O joy)

Uyo Meyo leun o san o kan mi o e (I rejoiced with you, and now it’s my time to rejoice)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)

O Uyo (O joy)

Uyo Meyo leun o san o kan mi o e (I rejoiced with you, and now it’s my time to rejoice)

Owo mi maye fufun nene (My hands are clean)

Yea

Ma yo fan da loke loke (I will keep walking excited and rejoice at the top)

Uyo Meyo (I rejoice with you)
