It is a big day for Nigeria at the 63rd Grammy Awards, 2021 as Nigerian singers, Ayo Ibrahim Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid and Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu (Burna Boy) have both won their first Grammy awards.

Wizkid won the award for Best Video alongside Beyonce, Guyanese singer, Saint JHN, and Blue Ivy for Brown Skin Girl, a track in the Lion King Album. The Lion King album was released in 2019 and also features other Nigerians such as Tekno, Yemi Alade and Mr Eazi on Don’t Jealous Me; Burna Boy on Ja Ara E; and Tiwa Savage on Keys To The Kingdom. On the other hand, Burna Boy won his award in the Best Global Music Album category for his 2020 album, Twice As Tall.

This is Burna Boy’s second outing at the Grammys. His first outing was last year, 2020 in the same category as his 2019 album, African Giant but he missed out on the award to African music legend, Angelique Kidjo. With his award announcement coming first, Wizkid becomes the first Nigerian singer based in Nigeria to win a Grammy award though he and Burna won on the same night.
