Saw a show on TV recently and was wondering what we know about Bed bugs, so we decided to write an article about it.
Sleep is golden; especially now where everyone seems to be in a rush. Having a good night sleep is important for many reasons, it helps you concentrate at work/school, boosts your immune system and can even help you fight off cancer. Little sleep can also pose several health problems, including hypertension, stress and irregular heartbeat.
Did you know, that bed bugs could deprive you of your sleep? These tiny brown, flattened, oval-shaped insects are capable of causing insomnia, increasing stress and anxiety, and cause skin rashes as well.
Bed bugs are parasitic insects, and they feed mainly on human blood. They also feed on pets and other warm-blooded animals. Luckily, they are not known to spread diseases.
Because these insects are small and flat, they can hide on cracks on walls, crevices around the bed and even your furniture.
Contrary to popular belief, an untidy house does not cause bed bug infestation, as even the most luxurious hotels could be infested with bed bugs. Your home can be infested with bed bugs through the following ways:
- Infested items, especially clothing and luggage. Bed bugs can travel on your clothes, your furniture or your luggage from other infested places such as hotels, offices or apartments.
- From animals such as pets.
- People can also bring bed bugs home from infested dwellings.
There are a few steps you can take to get rid of these blood suckers. If your home is already infested with bed bugs, you can –
- Call a pest control expert: get an expert to thoroughly fumigate your home, your office or your hotel.
- Use pesticides: you can also use pesticides for hidden places bed bugs, like cracks and crevices, sofas and other furniture.
- Vacuum your house: this will get rid of the eggs and bugs from surfaces, carpets, walls and mattresses.
To prevent your home from getting infested,
- Check hotels: when travelling, examine beds and headboards for bedbugs. Use a flashlight if you have to.
- Inspect your luggage, make sure bed bugs are not getting a free ride to your home through your luggage.
- Deal with cracks and crevices, patch them up.
Here is a poem dedicated to bed bugs
Good night, sleep tight,
Don’t let the bedbugs bite.
And if they do
Then take your shoe
And knock ‘em ‘til
They’re black and blue!
