Nigeria has placed a foothold on the global map of technology among developing countries. A recent development in dictating its technological advancement and competitiveness. It’s robotics reality has tempered down its slavish outlook of massive tech consumer. Robotic revolution forms the emerging reality as seen in Nigerians active participation in the inaugural youth robotic competition. This competition named First Global Competition took hold in Washington DC. There were over 163 countries at the challenge.
First Global founded by Dean Kamen offers a framework for an Olympics-style robotics events aimed at driving the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills that one needs
for the preparation of a better future. FIRST is an acronym “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”.
Nigeria was represented by the Robo Teens, group of four boys and three girls ranging between the ages of 15 to 18. The overall theme is the provision of access to clean water. The team had three coaches headed by Remi Willoughby, who served as the National Coordinator of the event in Nigeria.
Teams Armenia, Poland, and Europe came first, second, and third, respectively, yet it is audible that Nigerians are involved in this laudable feat. It is obvious that a new tide rising in the waves of Science and Technology in Nigeria. We celebrate with them and with Nigeria.
