ConnectNigeria_Dimgba_Igwe-e1410111584241 The recent death of veteran Nigerian journalist, Dimgba Igwe, has been described as a dark day for Nigerian journalism. Mr. Igwe died yesterday morning at the Lagos State University Hospital, LASUTH, of injuries suffered from a hit-and-run driver while he was jogging in his Okota Lagos neighbourhood. President Goodluck Jonathan, in a statement signed by his media advisor, Reuben Abati, said he received the sad news of the untimely death of Mr. Dimgba Igwe, Vice Chairman of the Sun Newspapers, with shock. “On behalf of himself, his family and the Federal Government of Nigeria, President Jonathan extends heartfelt commiserations to the publishers of The Sun newspapers, the Nigerian Guild of Editors, and all friends and associates of Mr. Igwe, for whom his unexpected death must be exceedingly painful,” Mr. Abati stated. Mr. Jonathan believed that the late Mr. Igwe will always be remembered as a “hardworking and dependable professional, who through his various writings as a columnist, author and public speaker, demonstrated a special ability to convey the truth and his convictions in lucid, compelling prose, and in a style that was shorn of cant and foppery.” The president prayed that God Almighty will grant the family of the late journalist the fortitude to bear the loss of “the very forthright journalist and media administrator, and also grant his soul, peaceful repose.” Chairman of The Sun newspaper, Dr. Orji Kalu, described the death of the former Deputy Editor-in-Chief and later Vice Chairman of The Sun as “shocking, tragic and a darkness in the annals of journalism in Nigeria.” “Dimgba Igwe was too much of a gentleman, and fine brain and mind to die tragically like this,” Dr. Kalu added. Mr. Igwe, 58, is survived by a wife and four children. Burial plans will be announced later, stated the management of The Sun newspaper.
