Peter Obi believes Baba-Ahmed is reputable for the position of a vice president if he wins in 2023.
After weeks of deliberation and consultations, Nigeria’s Labour Party on Friday, July 8, 2022, unveiled Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as the running mate of Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election. The unveiling was made by Peter Obi who disclosed that Baba-Ahmed was selected after a series of consultations with stakeholders.
“I thank all those gathered here today. They will bear witness and lay claim to being present on the day when the journey to Nigeria’s rebirth began. It is my honour to inform you, my fellow Nigerians and especially the OBIdients that finally, after very long and wide consultations, we in the Labour Party have found an eminently qualified Nigerian who will be my partner as we embark on our march to a secure, united and productive Nigeria,’’
Obi said during the unveiling on Friday.
“I have the distinct honour of presenting to you, my friend and running mate, and God willing, the next Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who has been described as ‘one of Nigeria’s youngest and brightest personalities’ who has distinguished himself in various areas of human endeavours.”
Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2003-2007. He would run for Senate under the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011 and win. However, his victory was short-lived after the election petition tribunal issued a verdict against his victory.
Born in Zaria, Kaduna State in the 1970s, Baba-Ahmed has established popularity for his numerous campaigns against corruption and bad governance. He was vocal against the third-term bid of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. His love for education would see him establish the Baze University in 2011 according to the standard abroad after describing the Nigerian educational system as “appalling.’’
