I saw that quote in a picture someone shared on WhatsApp, and it spoke deeply to me. For many of us, 2017 didn’t go exactly the way we wanted. Some aspects of our lives saw real growth and brought us joy, while others just seemed to have seen little or no progress. At times, all one wants to do is abandon ship. What makes the difference between those who start and finish, and those who start and drop off along the way? They choose not to give up, that’s what. I was watching the Disney animated film, Moana, recently. It reminded me all over again, how important it is to never give up, regardless of challenges. And boy, will there be challenges! If you haven’t seen the film, please do and see what I mean. Focus and persistence are essential for every person, who will be successful. Naysayers and dream killers will abound, as even some of your loved ones may not support you especially if you’re going against the grain, like leaving a plum job to go into business, relocating, or venturing into a new, unfamiliar career path. Keep your eyes on where you’re going. Results can be slow in coming, and you may find yourself wondering if you made the right choice after all.  Instead of quitting and backtracking, remind yourself why you started this journey in the first place, and remained focused. Sticking it out until success is the only way to prove the sceptics wrong. This is why you must be persistent and patient. In life, a “never give up” mindset is necessary. Many people have packed up businesses that would have thrived if only they had persisted. Many have dropped out of academic pursuits, where glory awaited at the finish line. Many would have brought hope and solutions to others, if they had seen their projects through to the end. You are destined for greatness, so never give up. Make a choice to fan the flames of your passion daily. Keep your goal in mind. Sometimes, it’s failure that brings on the urge to quit and pack it all up. Not many are aware that failure often aids success, so failure is a widely misunderstood friend. If you have not failed at anything, perhaps you are not learning or trying new things. If you want to be above average, if you want to build an extraordinary life, if you want to truly live and make a real impact, you must push out of your comfort zone and learn new things. And failure is part of learning how to fly. So don’t give up, dear friend. Persistence and vision go hand-in-hand. Successful people persevere, and keep their eyes on the prize. The road to success is paved with its fair share of challenges, aches and pains, and the above average life truly isn’t for the fainthearted. Successful people keep on moving, regardless of challenges. To unleash the greatness in you, you must never give up, and never give in. You must motivate yourself and constantly fan the flame by keeping the picture of the finished work in mind. Where are you going? Who are you becoming? Paint that picture very clearly. That’s what vision is. It’s a picture you can see. Some days will be hard, some days will be dark, but persevere. One day, you will thank yourself for not giving up.
