You see these people buried deep in their MacBooks in black hoodies, sleek sneakers and blue light glasses, coding from dawn to dusk, you probably think they are superhumans and can never be like them plus their ability to code which you don’t have either. While writing codes is fancy and can be seen as core tech, it is not all there is to ‘tech’ so if you don’t have a tech degree like Computing, Data sciences or Software engineering and looking to get into tech, you might want to keep going. Wanting a job in tech for the benefits is very valid. Tech jobs have a lot of pros – high salaries, flexibility, work-life balance, remote work, travel opportunities, in-demand skills etc. All of these or even more can fuel your decision in getting into tech and that’s fine. Getting hired is not the problem here but understanding what is required of you. It is always advisable to start even before a job finds you. There is quite a lot of information on the internet so Google has to be your best bet.

First things to note:

  • Make Research:

Would you like to go into ‘code tech’ or ‘no-code tech’? This is very important as it informs your decision in choosing fields. There is no easy one so try not to hack out the easy one. No-Code tech, on the other hand, avails you the opportunity to work in tech without having to code in real time, they include jobs in UI/UX design, UX Researching/Writing, Tech Marketing and Sales, Tech Policy etc. You can also work for organizations in FinTech (Finance + Tech), HealthTech, AgriTech (Agriculture + Tech) that provide everyday solutions through Tech solutions – these organizations need Marketing, sales, design and product professionals too. Know the skills required for these roles and work accordingly with a plan to acquire the ones you don’t already have.
  • Learn

If you are more suited for No-Code tech and you have transferable skills from fields like Marketing or Product management, it is quite easier to get into No-Code tech. You can decide to learn more about tech solutions that can be offered through your field. You probably need to read more and understand how your field syncs with the industry to aid your transition. If you are looking to go into Code Tech with no experience, then you need to learn to code. You could either enrol in courses and self teach, attend boot camps or get a degree. While learning, you might want to start showing off some of those things online, LinkedIn is a platform to explore this. From showing off your knowledge, it is most likely you get opportunities to intern or work on short projects because there’s a constant need for people in tech fields. Even when they are unpaid, take them so you could have things to fill in your portfolio. Always be on the lookout to network with others in the same field and with more intentionality in your learning process, you’re definitely close to landing your dream job. The beauty of the tech world is almost as though you can not completely predict what’s next. It is a constant evolution curve. It keeps people on their toes to innovate more and keep working on the next big thing. Featured Image Source: Medium
