At just the age of 17, the secondary school graduate has reportedly received over $5 million dollars scholarship worth to pursue her undergraduate studies abroad. Surprisingly, Ivy League schools in the US spared no time in indicating that they wanted the guru in their academic environment. The schools in the US include Harvard, Yale, Princeton University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Brown University, University of Virginia, and John Hopkins University. In Canada, the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia handed the Nigerian teenager full scholarship offers. Aside from scoring nine A’s in her WAEC, Victory was equally outstanding in the Cambridge IGCSE exam, bagging A in all six subjects. Reacting to her achievement, Victory described it as ‘’unbelievable,’’ and expressed her pride.
‘It still feels pretty unbelievable. I applied to so many schools because I didn’t even think any school would accept me. Their admissions processes are extremely selective. They only accept the best of the best. So, you can imagine how, on a daily basis, I have to remind myself that I actually got into these schools. It is surreal….They have made me truly feel proud about the hard work I have put into several areas of my life over the years. I am slowly beginning to realize that I deserve them.’ Victory Yinka-Banjo
Parents of the teenage sensation, Adeyinka Banjo (father), a private sector procurement and supply chain executive, and Chika Yinka-Banjo (mother), a senior lecturer at the University of Lagos, hailed the achievement of their daughter. Mrs Yinka-Banjo believes her daughter’s story will inspire others.
‘It is noteworthy that she is not one of the Nigerian-Americans who often get into these schools because of their advantage of being born and bred in the US. She completed her secondary school here [in Nigeria]. It would be great if her story can be used to inspire the youths of our country.’ Chika Yinka-Banjo
