To safeguard passport applicants from touts and to eliminate the corruption and the endless squabbles involved, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has stopped the payments of cash for a passport at all offices. Comptroller General of NIS, Muhammad Babatunde, said that henceforth all payments for processing passport must be done online and through verified banks to generate application ID and number on NIS portal and not through an individual. Therefore no control agent officer is allowed to accept payments in cash again. According to him, the NIS CG said it was crucial to take this step and make this decision because of the series of allegations particularly with passport complaints at some of the passport offices in Lagos. NIS spokesperson, Sunday James, has therefore advised that anyone applying for a passport should make sure to visit NIS online portal www.immigration.gov.ng to make payment and confirm approved fees for all Nigerian passport categories. James added that all offices managing passports have been ordered to paste all information required in their premises to help guide the applicants. He also advised applicants to dissuade from patronizing touts or agents in order to ensure a proper and efficient service in delivery. NIS General Babatunde also urged Nigerians to direct their complaints and inquiries to 07080607900 or the email address nis.servicecom@nigeriaimmigration.gov.ng, adding that they are committed to stamping out corruption in NIS offices.
