In the current Nigeria, the ‘generator set’ phenomena is a well acclaimed one. Any company into manufacturing this technology that does not have a presence in Nigeria may as well be assumed not to have a presence anywhere else. In the different workplaces, religious outfits and places of residence, it has become a vital commodity all to the current power situation. In fact, the commonest ones are referred to as ‘I pass my neighbor.’  Even in the suburbs, people make boast with such comments as the noise of their I pass my neighbor fills the whole space not only with noise but also with toxic gases not conducive to health. If we continue to lament on these issues, until the next century we may not still be out of it. But I still believe we will always need the gen sets and, in fact, more of it but this time- ones without noise, ones without pollution of any kind, ones with more solution, not mechanical devices, not even electronics though they may require working with these. I mean gen sets that are ingenious, possibly home-based, humans with the interest of the nation at heart, who know how to maneuver the odds and bring light to our darkness. Individuals who talk less and do more, low grade in complaint and bickering but high on doggedness, who by use have learnt how to beat against the tides. Can we have more of them in our governments, workplaces, religious circles and everywhere? We are bedeviled by a lot of issues in the country and each requires serious brainstorming with commensurate actions to make life more of what it should be. Take for instance, the body governing the Engineering practice in the country has been pushing for Engineering graduates to be posted to Engineering firms during the compulsory NYSC program but then the question is how many thriving Engineering firms are there in the country to absorb the teeming number of this group of graduates from both polytechnics and universities. The cost of running gen sets has not helped issues but trust me with enough of right minded gen sets then there is an end in sight to the issues in the nation. Yes, Nigeria cannot afford to be perennial consumers and so we need more of the generators of ideas to enhance our productivity and boost our economy. THEY ARE ALREADY WITH US. WE NEED NOT IMPORT, EVEN THOUGH WE CAN, FOR THIS IS THE KIND OF GEN SETS WE NEED AT THIS TIME.
