Assistant coach of NBA basketball team, Golden State Warriors, Mike Brown, has agreed to become Nigerian national male basketball team coach, and will lead D’Tigers to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan, later this year. President of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF), Musa Kida, has been in search of a coach with NBA experience and is convinced Brown will do well once he assumes duty. Brown who spent eight years in charge of Cavaliers and Lakers before getting hired to Steve Kerr’s staff in 2016, won the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2009 after his exploits with Cavaliers saw him register a 61-21, record an NBA Finals appearance.

Brown will take charge of what has been described as the golden generation of Nigerian basketball . D’Tigers finished the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, in group play with a 1-4 record, with their victory against Tunisia recorded as Nigerian male basketball team’s first win in the history of male basketball category in the Olympics.

The Nigerian basketball team which won their first basketball championship of Africa in 2015, was equally the only African nation to ever qualify for the Summer Olympics through the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Since the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil, Nigeria has been ranked 16th in the FIBA world basketball rankings.
