Meet the Boss: Friday Nwosu, Yesharvest

Friday Nwosu studied Chemical Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, and is the founder/CEO of Yesharvest, a business that connects farmers to their market by giving consumers access to fresh farm produce. He talks to Joy Ehonwa about entrepreneurship, technology, and agriculture.  CN: Where did the idea for Yesharvest come from? I came from a predominantly farming town, and I know the amount of farm produce that gets wasted and thrown away because the farmers can’t access the market on time. So when I ventured into software development, it was a problem I really wanted to solve using software technology. CN: How would you describe your business and the services you offer? We’re making technology that’s fixing distribution chain for perishable agro products in Nigeria, by making it easy for fresh farm produce to be moved from farms to final consumers within 48 hours of harvest. CN: Who is your business aimed at and how do you reach them? Our aim is to help farmers to access the market a lot quicker thereby eliminating post-harvest losses and also make fresh farm produce more affordable and more convenient to access by consumers. And we want to achieve this aim by building a platform where people can subscribe for freshly harvested farm produce and have it delivered to them immediately they are harvested. CN: Is Yesharvest all about fruits and vegetables, or will other foods be included as well? For now, we’re focusing on fruits/veggies. However, our mission is to make it easy for people to eat healthy so we are open to other foods in the future. CN: How does Yesharvest work; what steps do customers have to take? Customers select their Yesharvest Pack which can be N1, 499, N2, 499 or N3, 499, entitling them to select 3, 5, or 7 fruits respectively and then checkout. Subscription starts on Sunday and ends on Thursday. All deliveries are made on Saturday. CN: What do you consider to be the most challenging aspect of doing business in Nigeria? Gaining customers’ trust to make payment on your platform. CN: What are your own favourite fruits and vegetables? Banana, avocado, plantain, carrots, and coconut. CN: What advice do you wish someone had given you as an undergraduate? To spend more time learning coding, understanding and managing people, than striving for good grades. CN: Which entrepreneurs inspire you? Donald Trump. CN: What is your long-term vision for Yesharvest?
