Living in a small house or in an upstairs flat can be disappointing for gardeners or people interested in gardening. One of my aunts says that gardening is therapeutic and can often bring healing to a broken soul. I don’t know about healing, but there’s something about digging your hands in the moist soil; burying a seed only to see it sprout; watching your flowers/fruits bloom, that is so satisfying. To not be in touch with this feeling is… catastrophic. At least for me. That’s why I’m going to start a garden in my new apartment even though all I have is a balcony. Want to join me? Then here are some tips we should utilize for a thriving balcony pot garden:
Where is the Sun?
Observe and find out how much sun your balcony gets, or how hot, or cold or how much wind that gets to it. These would determine the kind of plant you would cultivate. You don’t want to grow a plant that needs a lot of sun when you don’t get much, or your gardening would end before you even started. Succulents and Cacti are usually the best plants when any of these weather conditions are not too good.
Which plants?
The perfect plants to grow in a pot are herbs, succulents, and cacti. Succulents and cacti are best if you can’t give your plants that much attention as they are die hard. Herbs on their own do not require much space or sunlight. You can cultivate herbs like thyme, rosemary etc. For succulents, you can go for Aloe Vera since they are useful plants and you can take advantage of its benefits.
What kind of pot?
Use big pots if you can as they will take more sand which means they will retain much moisture. Also, make sure the pots have holes to drain the excess water, but if they don’t, make your own holes. Don’t forget to use quality potting soil for your gardening. Don’t use the soil from gardens. You can buy potting soil from commercial gardeners.
