Lagos State could be ushering its popular yellow buses (known by residents of the state as ‘Danfo’) off its roads before the year runs out. The state government has indicated that the buses are not part of its future plans for the city.

Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, revealed this while speaking at the 14th Annual Lecture of the Centre for Value and Leadership, which took place on Monday. According to him, the plan to transform Lagos into a world class megacity could not accommodate the yellow buses.

Premium Times quotes the governor as saying that he wants to “banish yellow buses from Lagos this year.”

“My dream of ensuring that Lagos becomes a true megacity will not be actualized with the presence of these yellow buses on Lagos roads,” he said.

Reports suggest that the government plans to approach the Nigerian stock exchange for funds to aid the expansion of mass transportation in the state.

  • Wow! It’s like Governor Ambode been listening to me!
Really hope he brings in a better comfortable option with good drivers.
Just this morning I was on my way to work in a Danfo. We were on the fast lane (extreme left) and this new red LAGBUS or BRT with flashing hazard lights suddenly veered towards us from the middle lane. With no where to go our Danfo could have been side swiped across the divide to the other side at about 50km/hr!
The LAGBUS/BRT driver kept insulting our Danfo driver and driving very close to us like he didn’t understand he was at fault. You don’t overtake without first using your left indicator lights and ensuring that you are either faster than the other car or the person slows down for you.
Illiterate drivers putting lives at risk and there’s no one to report to who will take the report seriously.

  • Lagos can not be a mega city with the drainage problems… Never… Maybe the Governor should look into that?

The BRT drivers are also very rough.. They need to be cautioned!
