Yesterday, the National Theatre came alive with the voices of Nigerian women as Ifeoma Fafunwa’s HEAR WORD debuted with great expectation. And it did not fail!
Monologue after monologue, an amazing star cast wove a story every Nigerian woman is familiar with. From mothers who scold you for dressing ‘inappropriately’ at 16 and then encourage you to wear same at 43 to encourage ‘anything with 2 hands and 2 legs’, mother-in-laws who plan your life for you, gossiping neighbours who know your every move, girls who were physically taken advantage of, widows who are maltreated, female children who are molested by relatives, the northern girl child’s plight, women who are sold into prostitution, women who are locked in violent relationships and above all women who love their men.
The play which lasted an hour and a half held everyone spellbound from start to finish. With Joke Silva, Taiwo Ajayi Lycett, Iretiola Doyle, Bimbo Akintola, Omonor Somolu, Dakore Akande, Ufuoma McDermott, Elvina Ibru, Rita Edward, Zara Ejoh, and Debbie Ohiri, it was no wonder that the audience was laughing, clapping and generally giving as much as they were getting, which was everything and so much more.
Stories infused with current affairs and wrapped in very frank talk, ‘Hear Word’ is still showing on the 23rd, 24th, 30th and 31st at the Muson Centre. It’s a must see.
