It is common for individuals with little or no knowledge about tech to find some processes that require doing things online intimidating. I see these mostly when registering and setting up an online account. If online registration processes intimidate you, don’t worry. They are simpler than you think. You can register a domain name for your brand without being a tech expert. In this post, I will explain the process using Namecheap as an example. However, this post is not sponsored by Namecheap and should not be seen as a recommendation. You’re free to choose any domain registrar you prefer.

Step 1: Brainstorm Your Domain Name

Before diving into the registration process, start by brainstorming a list of potential domain names. Think about names that reflect your business or what you do. Keep it short, catchy, and easy to remember. You can use AI-powered domain generator tools like namify.tech and nameboy.com to generate domain names for your brand. It’s important to always have a few alternatives ready, as your first choice might already be taken.

Step 2: Check Domain Name Availability

Once you have a list of potential names, the next step is to check their availability. Head to Namecheap’s website (www.namecheap.com) and type your preferred domain name into the search bar. Namecheap will show you if the domain is available and offer alternative suggestions if it’s already taken. You’ll also see different pricing options based on the domain extension (e.g., .com, .net, .ng). If your top choice is available, you’re ready to proceed.

Step 3: Add the Domain to Your Cart

Once you find an available domain name that suits your needs, click on the “Add to Cart” button next to the domain name. Namecheap will guide you through additional options such as privacy protection and email hosting. Privacy protection is highly recommended as it hides your personal information from the public WHOIS database, protecting you from spam and identity theft.

Step 4: Review Your Cart and Proceed to Checkout

After adding your chosen domain to your cart, click on the cart icon at the top right corner of the page. Review your selections to ensure you’ve chosen the correct domain and any additional services you might need. At this stage, you can also adjust the duration of your domain registration (typically from 1 to 10 years). Once satisfied, click “Confirm Order” to proceed to checkout. Note, I always recommend to clients I work with to go for at least a 2-year duration for their domain at the point of registration.

Step 5: Create a Namecheap Account

If you don’t already have an account with Namecheap, you’ll need to create one. This step is straightforward; just enter your name, and email address, and create a password. A namecheap account allows you to manage your domain, renew it, or transfer it in the future with ease.

Step 6: Complete the Payment Process

Namecheap offers multiple payment options, including credit/debit cards and PayPal. Choose the option that is most convenient for you. Carefully enter your payment details and double-check your billing information to ensure everything is correct. Once you’ve entered all the necessary details, click “Pay Now” to finalize your purchase. After payment is confirmed, you’ll receive an email from Namecheap with your domain registration details.

Step 7: Set Up Your Domain and Website

After purchasing your domain, the next thing to do is to set up your website or email using the domain you just purchased. To do this, you will need to purchase a hosting service. Namecheap has various hosting service options that you can choose from or you can you can link your domain to another web hosting provider of your choice.
